The Yorkshire Motorsport Festival is delighted to announce that Steve Wilkinson will be providing the commentary during the weekend Festival of events.
Steve is a very experienced motorsport commentator and will keep the crowds both up to date and informed during the weekend.
Steve Wilkinson was introduced to motorsport by his father Les. The pair travelled extensively around Britain and Europe following Grand Prix and long-distance Sports Car Racing until the late 1980’s when Steve began to concentrate on Speed Events. He initially wrote reports and took photographs for Speedscene magazine (the Hillclimb & Sprint Association’s club organ) and subsequently became a regular contributor to Motoring News and Autosport.
He also got involved in the late 1990’s with the BMSA – the club which held the franchise for the British Sprint Championship. Steve was subsequently appointed the Press and Media Co-ordinator for this series and in addition to his press duties, took on board the task of liaising with the various sponsors.
Since 2001, when he first stepped up to the microphone at Pembrey, he has been concentrating on commentating at Sprints and Hillclimbs, where his extensive knowledge has meant that he is very rarely lost for words!
Steve has a substantial motorsport library of photographs and data from the events he has attended. He has been involved in fact checking several books and has been involved in tracking down the history of race cars whose owners are seeking FIA and HSCC passports. He is well-respected in the Paddocks for his insight into the Speed Events scene and competed in a variety of single seaters and sports cars. In 2006 he acquired a fully-restored Lotus Elan and for two years was the top Sports Libre runner in the British Sprint Championship.
Steve has also found time to co-author Hillclimbing & Sprinting - The Essential Manual, the definitive how to get started book for this branch of motorsport, with his great friend Phil Short.
